Digital Converter

Convert digital data sizes between bits, bytes, decimal units and binary units.

How to use this tool

Enter a data size, then select the input and output units. Read the full unit labels to distinguish bits from bytes.

Important to know

Convert digital data sizes between bits, bytes, decimal units and binary units.

Lowercase b means bits and uppercase B means bytes. Decimal kB/MB/GB use powers of 1,000; binary KiB/MiB/GiB use powers of 1,024. This is data size, not transfer speed.

Formula and methodology

1 byte = 8 bits; 1 kB = 1,000 bytes; 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes; 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes; 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes.

Example

1 MiB equals 1,048,576 bytes, or 1.048576 MB.

Frequently asked questions

Are MB and MiB the same?

No. MB means one million bytes, while MiB means 1,048,576 bytes.
