Important to know

Estimate adult resting daily energy expenditure using the Mifflin–St Jeor equation.

For adults aged 19–78 only. The result is an estimate, not a calorie target, diagnosis or individualized medical advice. The published equations use two sex-based constants; select the equation appropriate to your circumstances with professional guidance when needed.

Formula and methodology

Resting kcal/day = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (years) + constant (+5 or −161). Source: Mifflin et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1990, DOI 10.1093/ajcn/51.2.241.

Example

For age 30, 70 kg, 175 cm and the +5 equation, the estimate is about 1,649 kcal/day.
